Understanding Your Hips; Simple Techniques to Improve Mobility and Decrease Stiffness in the Pelvis

The majority of us are not born with stiff hips. This stuff occurs over time and it depends on what we do and how we do it. The accompanying image I have borrowed is of Master Yogi Guruji BKS Iyengar on his 90th birthday, but if you suffer from niggles and stiffness in the hip and pelvic region, you are certainly not alone.
Hip problems are related to things such as:
- Habitual movement patterns
- Sitting on chairs / in cars
- Sports /over-training / misunderstood exercise techniques
- Tension / overly tight muscles
- Lifestyle, age and wear and tear generally
Recently, one of my students cancelled an appointment with her hip surgeon because since returning to yoga after a year AWOL, her post-operative hip-stiffness and pain has improved no end. She wrote:
“By making a commitment to regular yoga classes and yoga stretches at home, I have been able to reduce inflammation and pain caused by an impinged tendon (Iliopsoas tendonopathy) after a THR (total hip replacement). Keeping my body stretched and strengthened has made an amazing difference to my mobility. Although I do have a few limitations of movement, Nikki always has an easier variation on offer”
I would LOVE to help you feel better and the good news is, once we have a basic understanding of the anatomy of this area and how certain activities and habitual patterns create certain responses, it is possible to relieve stiffness and niggles and self-manage many hip and lower-back issues with simple and specific exercises, particular techniques and mindfulness BEFORE things become chronic and you find yourself unable to do the stuff that you enjoy doing.
This brief, morning workshop is suitable for any reasonably active person who is able to get in and out of bed without help, can get up and down from the floor and is able to walk up and down the stairs without issue. I hope you will join me.
